Origin Geography & Terroir: The Pure Flavor of the Southern Shan Red Soil Plateau

Ywangan is located in Shan State, eastern Myanmar, nestled on a red-soil plateau at an altitude of approximately 1,300 meters. With a long history of agriculture and virtually no heavy industrial pollution, its soil and natural environment provide pristine conditions for chemical-free, toxin-free cultivation—forming the crucial foundation for Ywangan coffee’s clean and pure profile.

Engulfed in mountain mist year-round, the region experiences short daily sunlight hours and wide diurnal temperature swings. These climate conditions allow coffee cherries to mature slowly, developing rich layers, bright sweetness, and a distinctive tea-like lingering finish. Cultivation is primarily driven by the Danu ethnic minority alongside the Pa-O and Shan peoples, standing alongside Pyin Oo Lwin as one of Myanmar’s two core coffee-producing pillars.

Varieties & Post-Harvest Craftsmanship

Smallholders in Ywangan cultivate diverse varieties, with Catuai serving as the mainstay (approx. 80%), alongside S-795 (approx. 20%), and mixed plantings of Costa Rican T8667, Caturra, and San Ramon. Thanaka Coffee sources fresh, local coffee cherries and partners with a century-old processing mill to execute washed, natural, and black honey processes, showcasing a vibrant array of flavor spectrums.

Origin History & Development

Since 2014, the Ywangan region has continuously collaborated with the international NGO Winrock International, leading to year-over-year quality improvements. In 2019, Thanaka forged a bond with the AMAYAR Coffee mill. The two teams aligned seamlessly on shared values: women’s leadership, international market integration, and a deep commitment to coffee education—paving the way for a solid, long-term partnership. By upholding fair trade principles and eco-friendly practices, Thanaka Coffee ensures brand growth advances hand-in-hand with the local coffee industry.

Empowering Minority Women: From the Field to the Global Stage

Women play a pivotal role in Ywangan. Where once the coffee market had little connection to their lives, today they serve as cooperative leaders, cuppers, quality consultants, and estate owners.

Thanaka Coffee is committed to supporting women-led origin partnerships, fostering economic independence and technical training. The subtle complexity in every cup reflects not only the purity of the soil, but also the patience and dedication poured in by local women—from harvesting and hand-sorting to final processing. As one Ywangan female farmer expressed: "This is the first time I realized our coffee could reach the international stage."

Flavor Profiles

  • Greenland Washed: Notes of white flowers, lemon, peach acidity, honey, and brown sugar. Features a bright, vibrant acidity—perfect for high-acidity coffee lovers.
  • Greenland Natural: Bursting with floral aromas, honey sweetness, citrus, and rich tropical fruit flavors like passionfruit. Highly approachable, making it the top pick for those new to specialty coffee.
  • Black Honey: Round and velvety mouthfeel with sweetness reminiscent of nuts, citrus, and butter.
  • National Champion Washed: Brimming with citrus, plum, and oolong tea aromatics, finishing with notes of mandarin orange and maltose. It carries forward the proud quality legacy of the 2016 Cupping Champion.

Every cup of coffee from Ywangan carries the highland terroir, smallholder collaboration, female empowerment, and Thanaka Coffee’s long-standing commitment to the origin. We believe that the true value of specialty coffee lies in growing together with the community at origin.
