(Mountaineer Coffee)
Cloud Summit Gesha
Some coffees are discovered by physically stepping into the origin.
Yet Cloud Summit Gesha walked straight into our hearts long before our feet ever touched that mountain.
In 2026, Thanaka hosted a Specialty Coffee Sensory Training Course in Myanmar, bringing together diverse coffee samples from across various origins. Among countless blind cuppings and discussions, a Gesha from Mount Mengmao consistently captivated us.
It did not boast loud, overbearing fermentation aromas, nor did it pursue dramatic flavor gimmicks.
It was clean, pure, and balanced.
Dried berry sweetness unfolded gently, woven with white floral notes of jasmine and lily. A honey-like sweetness extended all the way through, finishing with an elegant and translucent tea-like aftertaste.
We cupped it repeatedly and cross-validated the results, driven by one question: Was this beauty consistent?
The answer was a resounding yes.
Thus, Thanaka decided to bring it back to Taiwan, bestowing upon it a name: Cloud Summit Gesha
"Cloud Summit" is not merely a mountain; it is a vista.
It evokes the mist-shrouded forests of Mount Mengmao year-round and symbolizes a coffee grown on high-altitude peaks touching the clouds.
Mount Mengmao — A Mountain Kept at a Distance from the World
Nestled in the northernmost Wa Self-Administered Division of Myanmar along the Yunnan border, Mount Mengmao rises between 1,300 and 1,650 meters above sea level. Wrapped in lush forest canopy and nourished by abundant mountain springs, the region is enveloped in cloud mist year-round with dramatic day-to-night temperature variations—creating an ideal sanctuary for coffee cherries to ripen slowly.
For years, due to sensitive border dynamics, this mountainous terrain remained rarely open to the outside world, serendipitously preserving an untouched forest ecosystem and pristine natural environment. To this day, it remains a remote, hard-to-reach sanctuary.
Thanaka has not yet been able to step foot on this land in person. This coffee, along with the harvest footage we share, comes from firsthand records provided directly by the estate owner. Because of this, every image and piece of information makes us cherish this rare encounter even more.
Mountaineer Coffee Estate
Cloud Summit Gesha originates from Mountaineer Coffee Estate on Mount Mengmao.
Since its founding in 2011, the estate has remained singularly dedicated to 100% Arabica specialty coffee—building a comprehensive quality management system spanning seed propagation, cultivation, harvesting, processing, and roasting. Over the past fifteen years, alongside refining quality, they have actively introduced elite cultivars such as Gesha, Yellow Bourbon, and Sarchimor to redefine global perceptions of Myanmar specialty coffee.
The estate’s mission extends far beyond its own borders.
Each year, seedlings cultivated by the estate are distributed free of charge to neighboring farming families, alongside shared cultivation techniques and organic fertilizers, nurturing a shared specialty coffee community. Post-harvest, coffee cherries are centralized and processed according to strict specialty coffee standards to ensure unwavering consistency.
The People of the Mountain Shaping Every Cup
The Wa people living on Mount Mengmao have lived in harmony with the forest for generations.
During harvest season, pickers carry woven bamboo baskets up steep, rugged slopes, hand-selecting ripe, red coffee cherries one by one. On these precipitous terrains, heavy machinery is impossible; every task relies entirely on human hands.
In the footage, we witness far more than a harvest—we see a profound reverence for the land.
Here, time seems to move a little slower, granting the coffee cherries time to mature gradually and accumulate richer sweetness and complexity.
Terroir Defines Flavor
High altitude, forest shade, natural mountain springs, and an unblemished ecological environment together sculpt the signature profile of Cloud Summit Gesha.
The entry begins with dried berries and honey sweetness, followed by delicate white floral aromas of lily and jasmine. The mouthfeel is clean and crystalline, lingering into an elegant and enduring tea-like finish.
It does not seek aggressive intensity; instead, it articulates the truest terroir of Mount Mengmao through purity, balance, and finesse.
Introducing a Mountain to the World
At Thanaka, we believe the true value of a cup of coffee goes beyond the liquid itself.
It springs from the climate of a mountain, the dedication of a community, fifteen years of commitment from a visionary estate, and a bond forged across borders through education and trust.
We look forward to peaceful and stable days ahead when we can truly set foot on Mount Mengmao to visit the estate and farmers in person. Until then, we hope Cloud Summit Gesha invites more people to know this mountain, appreciate this land, and discover another captivating dimension of Myanmar specialty coffee.
Because what is truly worth remembering is not just the cup of coffee, but where it comes from.
